WebNov 7, 2013 · The purpose of shorting 4 to F is to send the ignition switch (and, if you have one, idiot light) to terminal 1 on the alternator. That's the 'exciter' terminal of the regulator and tells it to start charging. Shorting 2 to 3 simply sends battery voltage to the 'sensor' pin #2 and, as the article explains, isn't necessary (though I used it).

It should be one where it relies on external resistance as that is what the resistive wire does, provides a voltage drop. I'm sure I-Man will have some helpful suggestions as well.
